Traffic is moving again on Evansville’s Riverside Drive. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:
(AUDIO: Riverside Traffic)
For the first time in nearly nine months, traffic is flowing in both directions on the Evansville riverfront.
It follows a major reconstruction project after a sinkhole developed at Riverside and Chestnut Street at the end of February.
The sinkhole expanded and forced the closure of all four lanes of Riverside.
Officials say work to repair the big hole -- and the sewers beneath it -- was hampered by stubbornly high river levels for months.
After crews temporarily filled the hole, some nearby homes and businesses reported water backing up in their basements.
Finally, crews made enough progress to reopen Riverside on Monday – although it is down to one lane each way near the sinkhole.
Evansville Water and Sewer Utility spokesman Travis Guffy says there’s no confirmed date for completing all the repairs.
