Longtime Civic Theatre Leader Dies

Evansville Civic Theatre
Dick Engbers

Retired Evansville Civic Theatre Artistic Director Dick Engbers has died at age 83

The local arts community is mourning the loss of Dick Engbers. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:

Engbers was the original artistic director of Evansville Civic Theatre.

The theatre group says began his storied history back in 1965, being cast as Yellow Feather in "Little Mary Sunshine."

He continued working with Civic Theatre as an actor and director for the next ten years and was instrumental in securing the troupe’s home at Fulton and Columbia.

In 1977, Engbers became the first full-time, professional artistic director at Civic and held the position until retiring in 2004.

Civic Theatre says Engbers’ passing leaves a large void in the Evansville theatre community, but his legacy will live on.

Dick Engbers was 83.
