An annual Day of the Dead celebration will not be held in Evansville this weekend. WNIN’s John Gibson reports on what will happen instead:
The groups Indivisible Evansville and the League of Women Voters of Southwestern Indiana will launch what they’re calling “Signs of Solidarity.”
The announcement is set for noon Saturday at EVPL West Park, where a Day of the Dead celebration is usually held.
It’s one of many celebrations that have been canceled this year over concerns about ICE raids targeting Latinos.
The groups describe Signs of Solidarity as a grassroots campaign to show visible, public support for “our immigrant neighbors.”
Another event, Fiesta Evansville, was also canceled this year for what organizers called the “safety and well-being of our community.”
