The GOP push to redistrict states with a narrow lead over democrats started in Texas and has spread to Missouri — late last week Vice President JD Vance returned to the Indiana to discuss redistricting with republican leadership

As Vice President JD Vance visited with Indiana republicans about mid-cycle redistricting, Rep. Alex Burton (D-Evansville), released a statement.

He said Hoosiers are not asking for Congressional maps to be redrawn.

“But plenty are asking for lower utility bills, affordable child care and fixes to Senate Enrolled Act 1. These concerns, plus the reality of a government shutdown clearly showcase priorities.”

Burton said in this climate, Hoosiers are stuck waiting for action on their behalf.

“Our farmers, municipalities, school districts and hospitals need the legislature to act swiftly. The longer inaction exists, the worse off we all are — which is disastrous for our economy."

Southeast Indianapolis Republican Andrew Ireland told NPR that the GOP has a "constitutional right" to redistrict in their favor.

He said democrat-led states like Illinois are already gerrymandered and the GOP has to respond. Ireland is referring to a 2021 map signed by Gov. JB Pritzker which added democrat seats, and reduced republican seats, according to Politico.

“Right now, the leader of our party, I think, recognized that issue,” Ireland said to Steve Inskeep in a recent interview.

Little is known about the details of Vance’s meeting with Gov. Mike Braun, Speaker Todd Huston and others.

On social media platform X, Braun said:

"I want to thank VP J.D. Vance for visiting Indiana and taking the time to meet with me today.

I appreciated the thoughtful discussion about how our state is serving Hoosiers through common-sense and strong leadership.

We discussed redistricting and the importance of ensuring fair representation for every Hoosier.

I look forward to continuing our partnership to keep Indiana — and America — moving in the right direction."
