Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry announced in May, 2025 that she wanted to switch ambulance service to the EFD. AMR asked for "pause."

The Evansville City Council allocated $5.5 million to switch ambulance service from AMR to the Fire Department next year

The Evansville City Council has approved funding to switch emergency ambulance service from AMR to the city’s fire department. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:

The council voted 6-to-1 to transfer five-point-five million dollars from the city’s Casino Fund to the General Fund to launch a new EMS Division.

Republican Angela Koehler-Lindsey cast the only “no” vote.

The move will end a decades-long agreement with American Medical Response.

City officials say the change will mean faster response times and reduced spending.

But AMR has said the city’s numbers are skewed and the company asked the council to pause the vote and take part in an independent study.

The city declined.

AMR will continue to provide services outside the city limits.

The fire department is scheduled to take over the city’s ambulance runs next July.
