Southbound Twin Bridge to be Repaired

File
The U.S. 41 Twin Bridges

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says a project starts Sept. 8th to repair steel on the bridge that connects Henderson and Evansville

A steel maintenance project is coming to the southbound Twin Bridge. And as WNIN’s John Gibson reports, it’s not yet clear how it will impact traffic:

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says a contractor plans to begin the project on the bridge between Evansville and Henderson September 8th.

The southbound span was built with T-1 steel which is no longer used in bridge construction.

In 2021, a fracture was discovered in a weld on the T-1 steel bridge between Memphis, Tennessee, and West Memphis, Arkansas.

As a result, the Federal Highway Administration issued a memorandum to all state departments of transportation to identify, inspect and test T-1 steel bridges to verify the soundness of all the welds.

During an inspection of the southbound Twin Bridge, officials say issues were discovered that need repairs.

The older northbound bridge was not constructed with T-1 steel and does not need the work.

Transportation Cabinet engineers are working with the contractor to develop a work schedule and traffic control plan that will “cause the least impact to motorists” traveling between Indiana and Kentucky.
