Vanderburgh County Commissioners have approved new regulations on golf carts. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
In 2020, commissioners voted to allow off-road vehicles outside the corporate limits of Evansville and Darmstadt.
Until now, golf carts were excluded from that authorization.
The new ordinance allows golf carts on county roads -- but only within residential subdivisions and under strict safety and insurance requirements.
The carts travel at lower speeds and offer less protection than larger vehicles.
The ordinance is designed to minimize dangerous interactions, operators must be at least 16 years old with a valid driver’s license, and kids under 14 are not allowed to ride in a golf cart unless accompanied by an adult.
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office worked with commissioners to develop the new ordinance.
Sheriff Noah Robinson says the rules “strike the right balance,” giving residents the flexibility to operate golf carts close to home -- while ensuring safety remains the “top priority.”
