Evansville’s Civic Center has made an appearance on a dubious list. As WNIN’s John Gibson reports, it’s ranked among the ugliest public buildings in the U.S.:
A poll of more than three-thousand people by the New Jersey Real Estate Network ranks the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Civic Center as the 76th ugliest in the nation.
It’s one of two Indiana buildings on the list of 100. The other is the St. Joseph County-City Building in South Bend at No. 63.
The report calls the Evansville Civic Center a sprawling government hub with angular forms and a concrete-heavy design that reflects an era that valued efficiency over elegance.
The Civic Center was built in the late 1960’s, replacing the city hall that stood at 3rd and Walnut streets.
The report notes the current center remains a civic workhorse, but its exterior “doesn’t exactly spark curiosity or delight.”
The poll may remind you of a saying that’s been around for centuries: “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
