The Evansville City Council will hear the first reading of a measure Monday evening to charge local wheel and excise taxes for road repairs

A proposed wheel and excise tax goes before the Evansville City Council Monday evening. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

City officials say the plan is in response to the loss of property tax revenue from the state, as part of Senate Bill 1.

Legislators also passed a house bill requiring cities to enact wheel and excise taxes to qualify for state funding for local roads.

The annual taxes would range from $15 for motorcycles, $25 for passenger vehicles, and $35 for heavy trucks.

The wheel and excise tax would become part of the annual vehicle renewal process through the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

The ordinance will be heard on first reading in Room 301 of the Civic Center beginning at 5:30 p.m.

A final vote on the measure could happen in two weeks.

Public comment is welcome at both meetings.
