Germania Welcomes First Woman

Becky Harl is the first female member of Evansville's Germania Maennerchor

After 100 years, Evansville, Indiana's Germania Maennerchor has welcomed its first female member

Germania Maennerchor has welcomed its first female member. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:

Becky Harl is the first woman to be a full-fledged member of the club that has celebrated German heritage in Evansville for 125 years.

Harl was a member of Germania’s women’s auxiliary for 30 years:

"I think it's come about just because our club needs to move into the future. We're a little late coming to the game with the women joining. Our membership has declined significantly over the past couple decades."

Harl suggests it’s about time:

"Let's be honest, women do a lot of the work and we have not had a say or a vote in the club in decision making or what the future looks like."

Harl and her husband, who is a long time member of the club, are among those preparing for the club’s biggest annual event, the Germania Maennerchor Volksfest.

This year’s festival runs from July 31st through August 2nd at the club on Fulton Avenue.
