Evansville City Council President Ben Trockman says losing community development block grants would be "devastating"

The president of the Evansville City Council is pleading with members of Congress to maintain community block grants. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

Democrat Ben Trockman has sent an open letter to Senators Todd Young and Jim Banks, and 8th District Representative Mark Messer –- all Republicans -- to protect and preserve the federal grant program.

The grants are among federal funding that President Trump wants to cut.

Trockman says the city put more than two-and-half million dollars in block grant funding to work last year.

He says the investment helped remove blight, upgrade infrastructure, and deliver home repairs to residents in need.

Trockman says losing the program would be “devastating” and cripple the city’s ability to address housing needs, stall neighborhood revitalization, and “undo years of steady progress.”

He says Community Development Block Grants have been a lifeline in the city’s history.
