The firefighting agreement between Newburgh and Ohio Township has ended after 17 years. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
The Newburgh Town Council rejected a fire protection contract from Ohio Township Wednesday night.
The council cited an increasing number of fire runs and said the town’s department could no longer provide protection for a more than ten-square-mile area.
Newburgh officials say the decision will not affect fire, EMS or other emergency services in the town, but fire protection for the larger area will be provided by Ohio Township’s combination of paid staff and volunteers.
Mutual aid agreements remain in effect between the Newburgh and Ohio Township departments to assist each other in times of emergency.
Ohio Township says it’s disappointed by the town council vote.
The agency says it has hired 17 new full-time firefighters to provide protection in the area outside Newburgh.
