Former University of Evansville President James Vinson led UE from 1987 to 2001

A former University of Evansville president has died. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:

The university says Dr. James Vinson passed away on June 27th at the age of 84.

Vinson led the university from 1987 to 2001 as UE’s 21st president.

The university says it experienced “significant growth in academic programs and student opportunities” during Vinson’s 14-year presidency.

He was also a teacher, often starting his days in the classroom teaching an 8 a.m. physics course.

Dr. Vinson also traveled to all seven continents.

Current UE President Christopher Pietruszkiewicz (pet-ruh-SKEH-vich) says through his leadership, Vinson changed lives.

He says Vinson continues to inspire UE’s mission to prepare students to “think critically, act bravely, serve responsibly, and live meaningfully."

Vinson is survived by his wife, Susan, and their daughters Suzannah and Elizabeth.
