Officials say fixing the sinkhole on Evansville, Indiana's Riverside Drive will take until October

Fixing a sinkhole and reopening Evansville’s Riverside Drive is still months away. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:

Evansville Water and Sewer Utility Executive Director Vic Kelson says the sinkhole at Riverside and Chestnut has grown more complicated since it first developed in late February.

Kelson told WNIN’s Friday Wrap that heavy rains and stubbornly high river levels have turned what initially looked like an easy repair into a major reconstruction project:

"Normally if you would take on a project like this we would plan it for a couple of years before we executed it. We don't do them on the fly like this. That makes it complicated and more expensive. But we expect it will be done and Riverside will be open hopefully by the end of October."

Kelson says the river has reached a low enough level and the contractor hopes to start work soon.

Nearby residents and businesses have reported sewage and water backups in their basements because of the sinkhole.

Kelson says residents can file a claim by contacting the Water and Sewer Utility.
