On Monday afternoon, the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) board of education OK’d contracts totalling just under $6 million for ARC Construction.
The Board had been informed of the project this spring.
Steven Scheller is chief facilities officer with the EVSC. He said the aluminum bleachers will receive a new veneer, and handicap accessibility will be updated.
“It will provide ADA accessible areas for ramps to get into the stadium, and also allow ADA access into the bathrooms, which currently you have to go down steps to get into. It will do some structural work on the building that's over 100 years old.”
Among several other things, emergency exit doors will receive new hardware.
The goal is to have everything completed by graduation of 2027. Work is expected to begin soon avoiding events if possible with a phased work schedule.
“Hopefully we can do quite a bit of work on it up until football starts, and then, obviously, there's only a certain amount you can do in there during that time,” Scheller said. “Then we'll hit it hard again after football, so it'll be phased in different phases to make that date work.”
Part of this project is addressing issues with a project from 2020. Enlow Field was built in 1926 and has yet to see a successful update to the facilities.
