Kentuckians still have a few days to apply for disaster assistance through FEMA

Kassi Minton (right) and cousin Amy Copp exit their flood-damaged home Wednesday morning, May 28. There is still water in the crawlspace in some areas, and a sump pump will be installed. Applies to those in disaster areas affected by severe spring weather, such as flooding in Henderson County; FEMA and local Emergency Management visited hundreds of residents to help them apply for aid

June 23 is the deadline to apply for aid through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA.)

According to FEMA, Serious Needs Assistance may provide “lifesaving and life-sustaining” items like water, food, prescriptions, infant formula, durable medical equipment and fuel for transportation.

Following the severe flooding in eastern Henderson County, FEMA visited hundreds of residents to help them apply for aid along with Henderson Emergency Management.

Kenny Garrett is director of Henderson Emergency Management. Many homes in the northeast of the county are in the floodplain and received damage.

“Everything from just water that's been up into the crawl spaces, all the way up to two and three feet high inside the living space,” he said. “So it's created all kinds of damage within those structures.”

Damage they’re still dealing with today. Garrett said his department is still working with affected residents for long-term recovery. He estimates about 300 had flood damage to their homes.

FEMA aid can include helping those displaced by weather events with moving and storage costs, medical and dental expenses, childcare costs and others.

To be eligible, the resident must reside in a disaster zone. The application is required along with damage inspection documents.

Kim Keblish with FEMA said there is aid for those when were under-insured during the disasters.

“… vehicle repair and replacement, moving and storage costs, medical and dental expenses, childcare costs, furniture and appliances, so it can cover a wide variety of assistance based on the need and circumstance of the applicants.”

Aid application instructions are here.
