The Blue Bridge at Owensboro will be closed for three months after Independence Day. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says repairs are needed to safeguard the iconic Glover Cary Bridge across the Ohio River.
The two-lane bridge has connected Spencer County Indiana and Downtown Owensboro since 1940.
Officials say repairs will include a new concrete driving surface, concrete repairs, and work on bridge joints.
Preliminary work begins next week with single lane closures planned for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
Flaggers will direct alternating one-lane traffic on the bridge during the preliminary work.
The cabinet says previous plans called for a six-month closure, but engineers worked to streamline the repairs and shorten the closure to 90-days.
Officials say the work will help to keep the bridge safe and open for “many years to come.”
They say about 7,200 vehicles cross the Blue Bridge daily.
During the closure, drivers will be detoured to the U.S. 231 Natcher Bridge, east of Owensboro.
