One Lloyd Expressway intersection in Evansville opening soon after a year of construction

Stockwell Road will feature two different types of left turns — eastbound drivers will use the Displaced Left Turn; westbound will use the Boulevard Left Turn onto Stockwell

This is part of the Lloyd 4U Project, with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).

The goal for this intersection and the project overall are safer intersections with fewer crashes and increased efficiency. Nicole Minton is public outreach manager for The Lloyd 4U.

“So the best of both worlds, who got the boulevard left turn and a Displaced Left Turn working together in tandem for a much more efficient intersection.”

Minton said there wasn’t enough room for dual Displaced Left Turns at Stockwell because of the Green River exit ramps.

For eastbound drivers on the Lloyd heading north on Stockwell, Minton said that the left turn is now going to be a Displaced Left Turn.

“… where we move you from one side of the intersection to the outside to more efficiently move cars through the intersection. If you are westbound on the Lloyd and you want to go south on Stockwell, that's now going to be a boulevard left turn.”

The Boulevard Left Turn is like the one at Washington Ave. and US 41, and the Displaced Left Turn is like the one at Epworth Road and the Lloyd.

This is called a "hybrid intersection, described at the 1:30 mark of this INDOT video.

An informational session was held Wednesday night, where attendees had more questions about the Boulevard Left Turn which more recently opened on Washington Avenue.

“Most people were pretty familiar with the Epworth part of it,” she said. “Because they've had an opportunity to drive that intersection and get more familiar with the Displaced Left Turn.”

Some people had questions about merging onto the Lloyd coming from Vann. They also spent some time just explaining the signal timing.

Minton said despite the rainy spring, the project is on schedule.

She said following Stockwell, construction crews will move on to the intersections of Cross Pointe Boulevard, and Burkhardt Road.
