The library system's “Our Summer: Building Together” opens with celebrations at five locations

Summer reading programs are getting underway in Evansville’s public libraries. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:

The EVPL is launching its “Our Summer: Building Together” program with celebrations at five locations.

Kickoff events are/were planned for Central, Red Bank, Oaklyn, McCollough and North Park libraries Thursday.

The EVPL says more than 4,600 individuals took part in the program last year.

They reported reading more than 60,000 books over the two-month event.

The EVPL notes research has shown that school-aged children reading just four-to-six books over the summer can prevent a decline in reading scores from spring to fall.

Children and adults taking part in the reading program can read on their own, read with someone else, listen to an audiobook, or read an e-book.
