The 8th District congressman issued a statement after Saturday's protest

8th District Congressman Mark Messmer has issued a statement regarding Saturday’s protest in Downtown Evansville. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:

The first-term Republican says the protest “reflects how blessed we are to live in the United States of America.”

Messmer says while he disagrees with many of the protesters’ positions, he fully respects and embraces their right to freely protest.

He issued the statement from Washington, D.C. and said he was not in the Evansville office to receive the 70-plus letters from the protesters.

Messmer said his staff was “happy to collect them.”

Protest organizer Wendy Bredhold delivered the written comments Monday morning at the congressman’s office in the Fifth Third Building.

She says they run the gamut:

"Cuts to Medicaid, Social Security, concerns about Elon Musk's access to our information, whether or not we'll have access to vaccines, democracy, the constitution."

Saturday’s event was held outside the bank building and called on Messmer to meet with constituents in a town hall.

Participants expressed numerous concerns about the Trump Administration.
