Indiana’s growth in 2024 is ranked 31st in country — ahead of many nearby states

According to Indiana University, immigration fueled Indiana’s population growth in 2024 — the largest annual increase since 2008

According to an analysis by the Indiana Business Research Center, Indiana added 44,144 residents in 2024. This brings the total population to 6.92 million.

What’s unique about the growth in 2024 is that this growth was propelled by immigration, not the ebb and flow of births and deaths.

Last year, immigration accounted for 70-percent of the growth — nearly 31,000 residents.

Indiana’s growth is ranked 31st nationally behind Kentucky, but ahead of Michigan, Illinois and Ohio.

Overall 73 of Indiana’s 92 counties grew in 2024. This is the largest number to show an annual population increase since 1997.

The growth was concentrated in central Indiana. Hamilton and Marion counties had the first and second-highest numeric growth.

Indiana had about 9,200 more births than deaths in 2024 — the highest level of natural increase since 2020, but still far below the pre-pandemic norm.
