On Monday morning, the Evansville Rescue Mission and United Way of Southwest Indiana announced a $1.5 million matching grant to support the new Snyder Center for Women and Children

The new Susan H. Snyder Center for Women and Children will house single women and single women with children long-term and provide wraparound services.

The building at 1400 Professional Boulevard in Evansville is a former Ascension St. Vincent Facility. The buildout began in late 2023.

The Snyder Center is a project of the Evansville Rescue Mission (ERM), which also runs the Men's Residence Center, Youth Care Center and Centennial Center.

Kyle Gorman, executive director of advancement for ERM said these funds will allow them to end capital fundraising and pay off the general contractor.

“And so we are blessed that they were able to partner with us, and that we could go through that process with them, and are super grateful for what they're able to provide.”

To finish the facility, they still need about $100,000 in kitchen equipment.

Amy Mangold president and CEO of United way of Southwest Indiana said they’re supporting this project because reducing homelessness is one of their priority community issues.

“This project really will help move women and children from a period of crisis to a period of stability and even beyond, to maybe be able to reach their full potential,” Mangold said. “So it's very aligned with our mission and vision for our community.”

Gorman said at any given time there are about 500 homeless individuals in Evansville and roughly 40-percent are women, or women with children.

“We're also going to be the only long term facility in Evansville,” Gorman said in 2023. “So there's a lot of places that will offer help and resources to women. But this place is going to be a one stop shop and you're going to be able to stay for a long time and really make sure that when you leave you leave for success.”

The project cost $9 million including funds to cover expenses for three years. The Snyder Center is set to open this week with a ribbon cutting.
