Sinkhole on Riverside Drive in Evansville

EWSU: Repairs will keep portion of Riverside Drive closed for "several days"

Crews have repaired a water main break but more work is needed to fix a sinkhole on Evansville’s riverfront. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:

The Evansville Water and Sewer Utility says the water leak on Riverside Drive has been stopped but both westbound lanes of Riverside remain closed between Chestnut and Cherry streets.

The EWSU says the sinkhole that formed this week was caused by an issue with a large brick storm sewer 25 feet below the road surface.

Officials say once crews are able to access the sewer, they’ll determine the extent of the damage and make repairs.

The utility says westbound traffic on Riverside Drive will likely be detoured at Cherry St. for several more days.
