At least one accident was blamed on the pavement drop

A portion of Riverside Drive remains closed after a large sinkhole broke up the pavement. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:

The pavement sank Monday afternoon in the westbound lanes of Riverside Drive between Cherry and Chestnut streets – causing at least one traffic crash.

Westbound traffic on Riverside is being detoured onto Cherry Street.

Crews from the Evansville Water and Sewer Utility were still assessing the damage Tuesday.

There’s no word on how long the work will take.

Broken water mains have been known to cause such sinkholes.
