The new 120-bed shelter is for single women and single women with children in the repurposed St. Vincent Hospital at 1400 Professional Avenue off of Covert Avenue.

The grand opening event is March 13 with a ribbon-cutting at 2:30 PM.

The project was officially announced Fall of 2023, and is more or less on time.

This will be an Evansville Rescue Mission facility. In 2023, Director of Development Kye Gorman said the need is great in the community.

He said at any given time there are about 500 homeless individuals in Evansville and roughly 40-percent are women, or women with children.

“We're also going to be the only long term facility in Evansville,” he said. “So there's a lot of places that will offer help and resources to women. But this place is going to be a one stop shop and you're going to be able to stay for a long time and really make sure that when you leave you leave for success.”

Stays could be about 12 to 18 months.

The project cost $9 million including funds to cover expenses for three years.

“That's going to allow us to really fine tune some of our fundraising goals and needs to allow that individual contribution and business contribution to catch up to where it needs to be to support the entire organization," he said. "We also operate a couple of social enterprises at Washington Square Mall that will lend itself.”

Evansville Rescue Mission also operates the Men's Residence Center, Youth Care Center and Centennial Center, all in Evansville.
