"Our Times" to be Archived at UE

Gene Kendrick
A 2020 issue of Our Times newspaper

The newspaper headed by Sondra Matthews chronicled events, issues for nearly 40 years

An archive of the Tri-State’s only Black-owned newspaper has found a home at the University of Evansville. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

UE say the Our Times archive has been added to the University Libraries' collection, preserving an important piece of local history.

The donation came from Sondra Matthews, founder of Our Times and a distinguished UE alumna.

She retired after leading Our Times for nearly 40 years.

The university notes that under Matthews' leadership, Our Times became a vital voice for the Black community in the Evansville region, championing issues of culture, equity, and justice.

UE says the archive will be preserved as a resource for students, scholars, and the community to explore the history and stories of the region's Black community.

Matthews is a lifelong Evansville resident who began her journalism career in Milwaukee before returning home and launching the newspaper.
