The company expects about 900 workers to help restore power in SW Indiana

CenterPoint Energy says reinforcements are on the way to help restore power in southwest Indiana. WNIN’s John Gibson has the update:

The utility was expecting about 500 more contractors and mutual aid crews to arrive Tuesday, bringing the total number of workers to about 900 — ten times the normal CenterPoint workforce.

As of Tuesday morning, crews had reduced the number of customers in the dark and the cold to less than 30,000.

That’s down from more than 60.000 early Monday.

CenterPoint says crews have encountered hundreds of downed trees and limbs, numerous broken utility poles, and wires on the ground.

Officials say if you see a downed power line, stay at least 35 feet away and call 800-227-1376.

CenterPoint hopes to have all customers restored by the end of the day Friday, with most getting it back before then.

A number of warming centers and overnight shelters have opened in Evansville, including Central High School, Lincoln School, Caze Elementary School, Helfrich Park STEM Academy and St. Benedict School.

The Ohio Township Office in Newburgh is offering an overnight shelter.
