On Bellemeade Avenue in Evansville, David Graham is clearing the crunchy ice and snow mixture from his driveway.
On Monday Morning, he’s one of the fortunate ones with power and no property damage.
“I’m waiting — I’m hoping that tree will hold up,” said, jokingly referring to an ice-encrusted seven-foot-tall tree safely away from his roof line.
Colder temperatures are expected throughout the week — but not much more precipitation.
Monday morning CenterPoint Energy reported 46,000 without power in the region; that number has been reduced to 39,337 by Monday night.
There are currently more than 1,600 outages in the region, with more than 29,000 without power. More than 20,000 of those customers are in Evansville.
This is because the threat serious winter weather delivered on its promise on Sunday as snow turned to sleet, coupled with freezing temperatures leading to a city and countywide state of emergency being called.
“Declaring a State of Emergency helps us coordinate and receive additional resources and support for our response to the winter storm,” said Mayor Stephanie Terry on social media. “It also helps us ensure public safety.”
Wednesday is expected to be the coldest day in the tri-state, with a low of 3-degrees.
Late afternoon, Vanderburgh County leadership announced that both the Civic Center and Old Courthouse will be open for regular business hours on Tuesday, January 7.
Warming Shelters
The city of Evansville in partnership with the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation, St. Ben’s, CenterPoint Energy and the American Red Cross, has opened three additional warming centers today.
These are at Central High School, Lincoln School, Young & Established, and St. Ben’s School, open until at least 6:00 p.m.
Open 24 hours are Evansville Rescue Mission and United Caring Services Shelter.
Crossroads Christian Church in Newburgh is opened as a warming Monday, January 6. CenterPoint Energy and the Red Cross are providing supplies/resources for the warming station.
North Park Wesleyan Church will be open day and night — bring chargers and sleeping bags.
In Henderson, there is an overnight warming center at The Salvation Army located on Washington Street.
A Red Cross warming center will be open Monday afternoon at The Gathering Place on North Elm Street in Henderson.
Due to road conditions and the continued freezing temperatures across the city, the Metropolitan Evansville Transit System (METS) offered free rides on all routes today.
