Angel Mounds to Welcome Winter

Angel Mounds State Historic Site

The sun aligns with two mounds at the historic sight at sunset Friday and Saturday

As winter officially begins this weekend, Angel Mounds is inviting you to experience it from a new angle. WNIN’s John Gibson explains:

Residents can get a view of what the state historic site calls a “breathtaking view” as the setting sun perfectly aligns with two mounds.

It’s a phenomenon at the historic site that only occurs on the winter and summer solstices.

Interested visitors are urged to arrive by 3:45 Friday or Saturday afternoon.

The sun sets at about 4:30.

Tickets are good for both days, in the event of clouds cover.

Angel Mounds was inhabited by people of the Mississippian culture from 1100-to-1450 A.D.

The mounds were built to align with celestial events like the solstices.

Angel Mounds has also opened a newly renovated interpretive center.
