An Medical Response ambulance slows briefly at Washington Avenue on its way south on US 41 to an emergency.
This is a busy, loud intersection for students, McDonald’s customers and anyone else crossing US 41.
But Gary Brian with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) said this footbridge will finally be open on, or around Friday December 20.
“It's been something that's been in the works for years,” he said. “It's been something that the community has really been vocal about. So yeah, we're really excited.”
The project was announced more than a year ago, and construction began in May. Discussions on a pedestrian footbridge date back to the 1990s.
While the bridge will be open, finishing touches and intersection improvements will continue until Spring.
The orange barrels and construction equipment will remain because further concrete work and painting are needed to complete the project.
That area will be converted into a Reduced Conflict Intersection.
Brian said, “it will be kind of a partial opening. We're still doing work out there. As it opens, we'll have basically a gravel walkway between the sidewalks and the pedestrian bridge.”
Discussed for decades — the project will cost $7.8 million with state and local funds and will be wheelchair accessible.
Once the work is complete there will be an official ribbon-cutting.
