Long time visitors to the McCullough Branch of the Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library (EVPL) might not recognize the 1960s-era building anymore.
The branch was closed August 1, 2023, for interior renovations and reopened this June. These updates weren’t technically wrapped up until recently — a reworking of the parking lot was still needed.
But overall those renovations were extensive, said EVPL Director of Communications and community impact, Becca Scott.
“In 2022 we recognized that we really needed complete reimagining, if you will, of EVPL McCullough, and so those renovations completely changed the floor plan. So we created some new and updated spaces. The children's area has been relocated and expanded, and we added an activity room to that space.”
So, the EVPL is celebrating with a four-hour event, showing off those new changes including a new meeting room and sensory room. There will be family activities, crafts and a ribbon cutting ceremony.
It’s Friday from 2PM to 6PM.
The $4 million project was part of the EVPL’s facilities master plan. McCullough was built in 1965 with only light updates since then.
Scott said this project was first, because of the feedback they received and volume served at this branch.
“… and so that was the first major project in our master facilities plan. And right now, we are doing renovations at EVPL North that are underway, and then very shortly, we're going to begin some updates here at EVPL Central as well.”
Scott said the branch had more than 50,000 visitors this past year to the branch and its temporary home at Washington Square Mall. This is despite being closed one month for the move.
