A long-time Evansville Democrat reflects on the current political climate. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:
Dennis Avery won his first term in the Indiana House 50 years ago and served 36 years at the Statehouse.
He told WNIN's John Gibson that he “eeked out” wins over strong Republican candidates like Randall Shepherd and Gregg Server:
"I don't think the Republicans have candidates of that quality anymore, people that looked at both sides of the issue and are open-minded. But they might say the same thing about us too."
Avery also has issues with the Electoral College:
"We have a system that I think is unfortunate that you can receive a minority of the votes and still get elected because of the Electoral College. That's something that ought to be reformed and someday perhaps it will be."
Avery spoke at a mostly downbeat night at the local Democrats watch party at Venue 812 on Morgan Avenue.
