At the corner of US-41 and Washington Avenue in Evansville, a worker prepares to climb the crane which is being used to establish footings for the pedestrian footbridge. The bridge should be open this fall.

The new span at U.S. 41 and Washington Avenue will open for pedestrians, with more work to follow at the intersection

A long-awaited bridge is expected to open to pedestrians next month. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

Students and parents who walk to Bosse High School or Washington Middle School may have reason to be extra thankful this Thanksgiving.

Evansville mayor’s spokesman Joe Atkinson says the new pedestrian bridge at Highway 41 and Washington Avenue is expected to open on the holiday.

Atkinson says there’s still more work to do on the project that will last into spring, but INDOT says the structure should be ready for walkers in one month.

The project also calls for transforming 41 and Washington into a “reduced conflict” intersection.

Parents called for a pedestrian overpass at the busy intersections for decades.

Former Mayor Lloyd Winnecke invited Governor Eric Holcomb to the intersection four years ago – a move that helped set the project in motion.
