A longtime Evansville church will hold its final service this Sunday and turn its keys over to a homeless advocacy group. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
After 175 years, Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ will conduct a ceremonial passing of the keys to staff and leadership of Aurora, Incorporated.
Zion is near the United Caring Services shelter on 6th St.
Aurora will convert the Zion site into a 41-unit housing development focused on Permanent Supportive Housing for families.
Aurora says it will include on-site case management and affordable units for families with a 60% area median household or below.
Zion says the development will ensure the continuation of the church’s role in providing housing for individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Evansville.
The church says Aurora will “adaptively repurpose the historic sanctuary for use as a community room for residents and core human and homeless services partner agencies.”
As part of the project, Aurora will also relocate its Street Outreach Team to the church property.
