A prominent Evansville author, teacher, and community leader has died. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:
Mike Whicker began his career as a plumber, later earning a degree in English Education.
He taught English and Literature at Reitz High School, where he also coached and supported Reitz athletics.
Whicker’s literary work highlighted the city’s role in World War II and wrote the popular Erika Lehmann historical fiction series.
Whicker also played a pivotal role in securing the LST 325’s permanent location in Evansville, serving as the executive director of the Memorial after its arrival.
He was also a member of Germania Maennerchor, served as a Vanderburgh County Commissioner in 2007, and served several other boards and organizations.
Whicker is survived by his wife of 51 years, Sandy, his five children, and 15 grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be held Wednesday, October 16th, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on W. Franklin St.
