In 2022, state agencies also participated in the local clean sweep event. Here, local director of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management Nick Carr (right) participates in on Ohio River Day — Thursday May 12.

There are several Ohio River bank cleanings every year; combined they can remove 20,000 pounds of trash from the riverbank

The annual Ohio River cleanup event, the River Sweep is this Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. at the Sunrise pump station in Evansville.

The goal is to remove trash from the riverbank starting at the Pumpstation and ending at Dress Plaza.

Normally only volunteers from the Evansville Water and Sewer Utility and plastic manufacturer Berry Global participate. But this year, for the first time, the public is welcome to join as well.

Volunteers can park at the lot at the Sunrise pumpstation, or near the skate park. Organizers are asking them to wear closed-toe shoes and clothing that can get dirty.

The event is a program by the Ohio River Sanitation Commission, started regionally in 1989.

There are also cleanup events in Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Combined with other Ohio River sweeps, more than 20,000 pounds of trash can be removed in one year.
