Action is being taken to address elevated levels of radon in the basement of the old Vanderburgh County Courthouse. WNIN’s John Gibson has more:
Radon is a naturally-occurring gas with no smell, color or taste and over a long period of time can damage a person’s DNA and potentially cause lung cancer.
The discovery of the gas has prompted the annual Halloween attraction in the courthouse catacombs to move to a new location on Main St.
More testing is planned and County Commission President Justin Elpers says county officials will work with Ryan Goelzhauser, a certified radon mitigation specialist with Popham Construction, on a long term plan.
Tenants above the basement of the Old Courthouse are not believed to be in danger.
