The city of Evansville is trying to determine if any legal action will be taken against a company that closed its local facility. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
GE Appliances, which is owned by the Chinese company Haier closed its tech center in the former Coca-Cola bottling building on W. Indiana St. this month.
Research and development performed at the center was moved to Louisville.
Some of the local employees may take positions in the Louisville center.
Nick Cirignano is an attorney for the Evansville Department of Metro Development.
He says Haier received a grant for equipment when it moved to Evansville in 2014.
Cirignano tells WNIN News that it’s “yet to be determined” if the city will take any action against the company now known as GE Appliances.
He says the grant provided a number of caveats regarding economic conditions.
Cirignano also says GE has been cooperating as the city tries to “determine the cirumstances” surrounding the closing.
It’s not clear exactly how many employees lost their jobs, but it’s believed dozens of people worked at the tech center.
