Residents are encouraged to participate in 812 Day, by shopping local businesses, visiting and/or donating to city parks and helping clean up the Jacobsville Neighborhood.
This multi-faceted event was made possible by The City of Evansville, the Evansville Flag Group and several local businesses.
The day will begin at 9 a.m. with the raising of the new Evansville City Flag at the Vanderburgh County Civic Center. The new flag was an effort spearheaded by local middle schoolers.
Then at 10 a.m., the ‘Block-by Block’ initiative to improve the Jacobsville neighborhood begins. Participants and volunteers are meeting at Hope City Church to walk several blocks offering services.
This is Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry’s first 812 Day event as Mayor.
“We are asking the community to really honor our city,” she said. “And that's number one, random acts of kindness. And you can determine what that is based on your own personal interests.”
Terry is also encouraging residents to participate by shopping local businesses, visiting and or donating to city parks and helping clean up Jacobsville.
She said the Block by Block initiative will be ongoing with other neighborhood projects. The Jacobsville Neighborhood is statistically the area of Evansville with the highest poverty rate.
Terry said this is a new initiative, but also a continuation of past effort to make intentional efforts in certain areas.
“… and not just, you know, cutting grass and trimming trees, but also thinking about, ‘how do we offer them the services that they need from city government, making sure that they're utilizing the services that we have to offer.”
They’re razing an abandoned building and improving other eyesores. Future Block by Block projects will be announced later this month.
