Evansville firefighters had to perform a rope rescue

A woman is safe after being rescued from a sewer near the Evansville riverfront. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story.

Police say the woman found her way into the sewer system near Sunset Skatepark on Sunday, got lost, and told central dispatch she was stuck under a heavy grate.

Police arrived shortly before noon and asked for help from Evansville firefighters who performed a rope rescue.

A police sergeant said it took more than ten firefighters to get the grate open.

The woman was lifted out of the sewer with no injuries shortly after noon.

There was no word of any charges in the incident.
