Summer officially arrives at 3:50 Thursday afternoon, Evansville time. As WNIN’s John Gibson reports, it brings with it plenty of heat, humidity, and potentially unhealthy air:
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has issued an Air Quality Alert for much of Indiana, including the southwest part of the state, on this summer solstice.
Ozone levels are expected to be in the “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” range.
Residents are urged to drive less, carpool, take public transportation, avoid idling, and walk, bike, or work from home if possible.
You’re also asked to wait until evening to refuel your vehicle or use gasoline-powered lawn equipment.
The Tri-State has about 14-and-three-quarter hours between sunrise and sunset around the summer solstice.
By the winter solstice six months from now, we’ll be down to about nine-and-a-half hours of daylight.
More: IDEM has extended the air quality alert through Friday.
