Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry snips a red ribbon, celebrating the new Baker Flats apartments

The apartment building will offer "affordable housing" for seniors in the Jacobsville neighborhood

A ribbon is cut, officially opening a new apartment building in Evansville’s Jacobsville neighborhood. WNIN’s John Gibson was there:

Mayor Stephanie Terry led the ribbon cutting on Baker Flats.

The four-story building at Baker and Illinois streets contains 52 affordable apartments for residents ages 55 and older. More than half of the units are already leased.

Terry told the gathering says the need is real among Evansville residents:

"By offering them safe, stable housing they can afford we are not only investing in those people, we are investing in (the) safety and stability of this entire Jacobsville neighborhood."

Matt Gaddis of House Investments says the project’s construction costs rose 40 percent:

"So the city of Evansville really made this possible by stepping up to the plate. They provided $1.85 million in Home A.R.P funds to help (fill) that gap."

Mayor Terry also thanked the previous administration:

"Kelly Coures and Mayor Winnecke's administration for starting this project. And so we're glad to be a part of making sure it got over the finish line."

Baker Flats is next door to the Forge on Main apartment complex, which also includes a DG Market.
