Alcoa Warrick Drops Liberty Mine Plan

File

The Warrick Operations says it will keep its energy options open

Alcoa has reversed itself and decided against expanding its coal operations at the Liberty Mine in Warrick County, at least for now. WNIN’s John Gibson reports:

Alcoa Warrick Operations recently announced plans to rezone more than 3,500 acres of land for surface-level mineral extraction, storage and processing.

The plan was met with intense opposition from nearby residents and environmental advocates.

In a statement, Alcoa said the Warrick Operations decided to delay the planned expansion at Liberty Mine and has instead secured agreements to purchase coal from the market.

Alcoa said it "continues to consider all options for energy supply, including opportunities at Liberty Mine or from other suppliers."

The rezoning would have expanded surface mining in the area of New Harmony and Millersburg roads.
