The Vanderburgh Humane Society is hosting an adoption event this weekend with an eye on the Governor’s Mansion. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
It’s called a “1412” adoption event to urge Governor Eric Holcomb to veto House Bill 1412.
The Humane Society’s Laurie Miller says if signed, the bill would clear the way for more puppy mills and pet stores:
"All the shelters in the area and nationwide are just bursting at the seams. There's really no reason to ever shop for a pet again. And just producing them in a mill for unknowing customers to purchase really isn't helping anybody."
The bill voids local ordinances prohibiting the sale of dogs at retail pet stores.
It also requires all animal care facilities to register with the board of animal health.
The bill’s supporters say it holds pet stores responsible for the health of the dogs they sell and encourages stores to source from reputable breeders.
The Vanderburgh Humane Society is offering adoptions of dogs, cats and other small animals for $14.12 – or $15 cash – this Saturday form noon-to-6 pm at the society off Morgan Avenue and at the River Kitty Café on Main St.
River Kitty is also open Sunday.
