Vanderburgh County Commissioner Cheryl Musgrave is calling on local Republican Party Chairman Mike Duckworth to resign. WNIN’s John Gibson has the story:
Musgrave’s call follows Duckworth’s decision to allow a challenger against Musgrave in the upcoming primary election.
Local United Way leader Amy Canterbury faces Musgrave on the ballot, despite Canterbury voting Democratic in the 2022 primary.
State law allows party chairs to remove candidates that did not vote for the party in the previous two primaries.
Duckworth decided not to remove Canterbury. He told WNIN this week that he’s working to “expand the party.”
Duckworth also says Canterbury always voted Republican in previous elections.
Musgrave points out that under Duckworth, local Republicans lost all but one city council seat and the mayor’s office last year, despite more than one million dollars in resources.
Musgrave herself lost to Natalie Rascher in the GOP Primary for mayor.
In a release, Musgrave calls herself a “loyal Republican” and points out that Duckworth attended Democratic Mayor Stephanie Terry’s Inaugural Ball.
Musgrave even points to accusations against Duckworth during his time as a sheriff’s deputy decades ago.
The local election board will hear challenges at its meeting next Wednesday, including those against Canterbury.
