Fresh off the opening of their “Rats Live on no Evil Star” exhibit depicting symmetry, the Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana (ARTSWIN) wants to see how you can play with light and shadow for their next exhibit, to celebrate the solar eclipse on April 8.
Submissions are open until March 6.
ARTSWIN Director of Development Lisa Moore says this new exhibit will likely attract a lot of photography, but other media is welcome.
The exhibit is called ‘Shadow and Light.’ The goal is to attract submissions that play with those main elements — light and darkness.
“And either artistic representation with 2D Media, or the use of light through the media, or light as a component in the artwork,” she said. “Naturally I think a lot of people go to photography, but there's so many more elements available, that we're excited to see what the artists come up with.”
She said there will be a lot of people in the region to view the solar eclipse, so it makes sense to commemorate the event.
This will be a juried exhibit, meaning anyone can submit, but only so many pieces will be accepted and displayed.
Helping regional high school art students receive free Arts Council of Southwestern Indiana membership is a big part of their new Month for the Arts Initiative.
Their goal for the month of February is $20,000 in donations and sponsorships.
ARTSWIN already gives all Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation (EVSC) High School art students free membership, which is usually $50 dollars per year.
But the council helps serve 10 surrounding counties. In an attempt to spread membership to the art students in each of those, they’re seeking recurring donations of $25 per month, said ARTSWIN Director of Development Lisa Moore.
“It allows six area high school students, high school visual arts students, to be members of our organization, and memberships to the Arts Council gets them into our exhibit, which is great when you're a high school student to be able to say that you're in a gallery, it's great on a resumé and a prospectus or a CV.”
She said the goal this month is to raise awareness of ARTSWIN and its many events.
Funds will cover students’ membership but also support the organization and those events such as rooftop concerts and support for local art projects.
