Philip Smith will lead the EPD and Tony Knight takes charge of the EFD

Evansville Mayor Stephanie Terry has announced the city’s new police and fire chiefs. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:

Terry chose Philip Smith as Evansville’s new police chief and Anthony Knight to lead the fire department:

"The incoming police chief brings extensive experience in community engagement, while the fire chief has a proven track record of implementing innovative safety measures."

Chief Smith emphasized transparency and community policing:

"We will continue the transparency and community policing that the community has come to expect and increase our efforts, starting with our parks."

WNIN News asked Fire Chief Knight about the city’s aging firehouses:

"Some of our stations are approaching 80 years old but with that, that's a big hefty price tag that comes associated with those. Your standard two-bay fire station runs anywhere from 4 to 8 million dollars."

Knight said alternative funding sources and two years of planning will be needed before any fire stations can be replaced.

Mayor Terry also announced plans to establish the city’s new legal team.
