The change from single-digit temperatures to temps in the 50’s is causing numerous underground water leaks. WNIN's John Gibson reports:
Evansville Water and Sewer Superintendent Justin Guetling says crews have responded to about 50 leaks in recent days:
"We're seeing a lot of old services that weren't retired properly maybe 15, 20, 30 years ago, start springing leaks."
Those leaks include one that shut down Washington Avenue between Vann and Villa during Tuesday’s morning drive.
That leak also included a gas line rupture.
Guetling says it’s not clear which break may have caused the other:
"They were close in proximity to one other. Did one have effect on the other one? Probably."
Utility crews also fixed a leak on W. Franklin St. Tuesday and a major break on Green River Road just south of the Lloyd Expressway on Saturday.
The area close to Green River and the Lloyd remains under a boil water advisory.
