The Vanderburgh County Health Department has received more than $2.1 million through the Health First Indiana initiative. WNIN’s John Gibson has details:
The Indiana General Assembly created the HFI last year and Vanderburgh County Commissioners opted into it.
The initiative provides funding to help counties meet needs of their communities by implementing evidence-based preventive programs and delivering core public health services.
County Health Department Administrator Joe Gries says with the funding, the county hopes to see an improvement in health outcomes in the coming years.
Gries says improving the health of the community creates an environment “where children and other residents can succeed and thrive.”
This funding is expected to expand core services such as maternal and child health, trauma and injury prevention, and chronic conditions, such as obesity.
