Outgoing Deputy Mayor Steve Schaefer (center) wraps up a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday morning for the overall project that when complete, will unite Wesselman Park with Roberts Park, and provide new entrances for both areas.

Three projects will start soon at Roberts and Wesselman Park — a new entrance for Wesselman Park, the extension of Division Street with a new entrance at Roberts Park, and connecting and uniting the two parks

Following the ceremonial groundbreaking at Roberts Park on Wednesday, work will soon begin to unite Wesselman Park, and give the entrance a new look.

Roberts Park is located just south of Wesselman Park — a stone’s throw from the Lloyd Expressway.

Outgoing Deputy Mayor Steve Scheafer said this effort is three projects in one, spanning Wesselman Park and the soon to be dubbed “Roberts Festival Grounds.”

“Today we broke ground on a project that connects Roberts Festival Grounds with Wesselman Park,” Schaefer said, standing before the field itself. “This contract includes three projects, the extension of Division Street, coming up and providing another entry point, and then connecting this area with Wesselman Park. And then the third project is the new entrance to Wesselman Park.”

Under this project, Roberts Park will become part of Wesselman Park.

Schaefer said the City Engineer’s Office is covering the cost of the extension of Division Street which will be $975,316.29.

The Parks Department is funding the main entrance to Wesselman Park and the connector road at a cost of $827,623.18.

This project is integral to the city master plan, said Schaefer.

“This laying the foundation and having the infrastructure in place is very important to be able to move the entire vision forward.”

This includes outdoor sports like a parkour course, volleyball and basketball courts and a new accessible playground groundbreaking in December.

Schaefer says all three main projects are expected to be complete by August or September 2024. Deig Brothers was awarded the construction project.
